Info on costs

The costs of the program depend on the number of days in Rovaniemi and excursions chosen. Please note that these costs are estimates based on currently available information and are subject to change.

Tuition fee

There are no tuition costs for students enrolling in the program through the University of Lapland. There are separate participation fees for optional excursions. Students from the U.S. must register through Skidmore College and should contact Assistant Professor Kelly Melekis for information on tuition costs.

Travel visas

Students accepted into the program who need a visa to enter Finland can request a letter confirming their acceptance. When making this request, please provide a mailing and an e-mail address where the letter should be sent. Students from countries requiring visas are urged to apply early as the visa process can be quite lengthy.

Hostel Café Koti

Accommodation is available from Sunday 22.5 to Thursday 2.6.2022.

Hostel Café Koti is situated in the city center and approx. 1,5 km from the university. Rooms have their own bathrooms. Bed linens and towel are included. Free Wi-Fi is available. There is an equipped kitchen, a cozy relaxing area with TV and a Finnish sauna at guests use.

We recommend that students attending the International Summer School stay at Hostel Café Koti. If you are interested in this opportunity, fill it in the application form. We will reserve the rooms for Summer School participants.

Please note that your reservation for this accommodation is permanent and needs to be confirmed to us by 13.4.2022. After this date, you'll have to pay the whole accommodation price even if you decide not to attend Summer School after all.

 

Hotel Rudolf

Hotel Rudolf offers special prices for Summer School students. Rooms with the special prices are available from Sunday 22.5 to Thursday 2.6.2022.

Hotel Rudolf is situated 600m from the city center and approx. 2 km from the university (30 minutes’ walk). The rooms are equipped with TV, bathroom with shower, bath and bed linens and free Wi-Fi. Students share a kitchenette which comprises of a two-ring-hob, kettle, coffee machine, washing up basin and a small fridge.

Room rates: triple room 80 €/night, double room 65 €/night, breakfast (14 €) is not included in the room rate. This special offer is valid until 28.4.2022. The prices include bed linen, towels and a free wifi.

We will also get a special reservation code soon. The reservation can be cancelled until 18.00 (6 PM Helsinki time) the day before the arrival date without a charge. Excursions

Excursion to Utsjoki

Time and duration: Monday - Wednesday 30.5.-1.6.2022 (3 days)
Group size: max. 35-40
Price: approximately 180 €/ person including bus transportation, lodging + bed sheets and towel, meals and entrance tickets and guidance in the Reindeer Farm, the Sami Parliament and the Siida museum.

Accommodation in Utsjoki is at Kevo, at subarctic research station. Participants will live in shared cabins and rooms. Rooms are for 2 persons and cabins for 3-5 persons. The accommodation facilities are very basic, but adequate. Departure from Rovaniemi is on Monday at 7:00 am. Arrival back in Rovaniemi is on Wednesday at 19:00 pm.


Excursion to Helsinki

Time and duration: Thursday-Saturday 2.- 4.6.2022 (3 days)
Group size: max. 30

The participants make there own lodging arrangements in Helsinki. We recommend Eurohostel as the lodging site for the summer school participants. 
The hostel accommodation prices vary according to demand and date. Some examples of the room rates in December 2021: budget triple room from 19.05 € / person night, budget double room from 25.30 € / person / night, single room from 41.60 € / person / night. Individual reservations may be cancelled without cancellation fee before 6 pm on the arrival day. Participants are responsible for the cost of their own transportation (railway/flight ticket from Rovaniemi to Helsinki), meals, public transportation, tickets or fees.
