TEFI10 Knowing with nature – The future of tourism education in the Anthropocene

The Multidimensional Tourism Institute (MTI), University of Lapland, together with Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI) is proud to organize the first TEFI conference held in Finland.

The conference takes place in Pyhätunturi (Finnish Lapland) from June 3 to 6, 2018. The theme of TEFI10 is Knowing with nature – The future of tourism education in the Anthropocene.

The 4-day event consists of keynote speeches, creative workshops, and hospitable get-togethers in the evenings – not to mention outdoor activities: knowing with/in the surrounding fells of the Finnish Lapland.

According to the spirit of TEFI initiative the conference is a multidisciplinary gathering engaging not only scholarly actors but also local human and non-human actors in order to create new vistas for tourism education and development.

What is TEFI?

TEFI represents a new and inclusive tourism network of tourism scholars and practitioners. It is a social movement comprised of people (educators, researchers, industry actors and community members), who seek to progress an alternative type of tourism that is sustainable and just, that delivers blended social, economic and environmental value, and that promotes vibrant flourishing communities.

The ambition of the network is to move beyond business as usual, exploitative and extractive industrial approaches to tourism. We seek to create spaces of knowledge co-creation between industry and practice and we look upon education as a two-way link that moves us towards evidence-based tourism policy, planning and place-making.
