CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance: Legal and Ethical Perspectives

Research Seminar and Social Event

In the context of the VIDA Project Digital Paths, Living Memories: A Trilateral Education Network for Indigenous Digital Heritage a Research Seminar will be held on 22 April, from 13:30 to 16:00.

The seminar will take place at the University of Lapland, Kaarina-sali (C193), and will also be accessible online via Teams (link provided below).

The event will explore the implementation of the CARE Principles for Indigenous Data Governance—Collective Benefit, Authority to Control, Responsibility, and Ethics—giving insights from both legal and ethical perspectives.

The programme will feature presentations by invited speakers (listed below). A final version of the programme will be shared closer to the event.

About the book

Njuike fárrui 1 is a study book developed within the HEI-SÁMI project (funded by the Nordplus Language), designed to support the learning of Northern Sámi through practical, interactive, and culturally meaningful content. The material aims to strengthen learners’ active language skills in everyday and professional contexts.

Bios Maiju Saijets and Ilona Kivinen

Maiju Saijets is a doctoral researcher at the Faculty of Education, University of Lapland. Her research focuses on the media and robot literacy of Sámi-speaking older adults, examining how these literacies are shaped within linguistic and cultural contexts. Saijets also works as a researcher in the MediaRoboLit 65+ project (funded by the Research Council of Finland) and the INMERS project (European Education and Culture Executive Agency). In addition, she has experience teaching the Sámi language at the university level.

Ilona Kivinen is a University Lecturer in Sámi language at the University of Helsinki. She works in the field of Finno-Ugric linguistics and Sámi language studies, and is involved in both teaching and research related to Sámi language and culture. Her work includes developing Sámi language education as well as contributing to research projects and publications in the field.
