IkäihMe-project: Developing teacher education of adult educators - targeting older people's media education

Funding

The project is part of Teacher Education Development Programme of the Ministry of Education and Culture (2018–2021).

Project partners

IkäihMe-project is coordinated by the University of Lapland, and the project is implemented in co-operation with the University of Helsinki and a large number of stakeholders, that is, senior citizens and experts working with and for them in non-governmental organizations, public sector, and adult education organizations.

Description

The aim of the project is to develop the teacher education of adult educators in terms of its teaching practice, contents, and methods. During the project, a digital study module focused on older people’s media education is designed, produced, and piloted in a research-based manner. The study module can be freely used by different universities, liberal adult education organizations, adult education, and training organizations. The study module focuses on older people’s media education, digital competences, teaching, and learning.

At the University of Lapland, the study module is integrated into teachers’ pedagogical studies, where the new blended learning course "Older people, media education and facilitation of learning (2 cr)" is produced. At the University of Helsinki the online course “Older people and media education (2 cr)” is being implemented as a part of teacher education of subject teachers in adult education. The universities of Lapland and Helsinki are responsible for the design, piloting, and further development of the study module on a research basis.

Research activities

The project is a design-based research (DBR) project, which aims to increase knowledge of media education that is best suited to the own needs of older people. Research data is collected, for instance, through a systematic literature review as well as design and evaluation workshops for older people, professionals working with them, and teacher students. The information will be utilized in the design of the contents and methods of the study module on media education produced in the project.
