Welcome to an old-school academic afternoon seminar at the University of Lapland! The seminar will examine the spirit and the body of the times at the university, in sports culture, and in tourism. Have the dreams of freedom, equality, and fairness that emerged in the 1980s been realized? What will take us on the move in the future?

The speakers include Professor of Tourism Cultural Studies Soile Veijola from the University of Lapland, who will become a professor emerita in the summer of 2026, philosopher Esa Sironen, Professor Emerita of Social and Public Policy Eeva Jokinen from the University of Eastern Finland, and the creative research community of the Tourism Studies unit.

“It felt like a fun idea to get together to reminisce, explore, and reinvent the things that have fascinated me and my fellow researchers for decades. To do it in the old academic style. Yet let younger generations of researchers have the final say”, professor Veijola says.

The seminar is divided into two parts. There will be a half-hour coffee break in between. Please, note: the first session about university will be conducted in Finnish. The second session about tourism will be in English. The entire seminar will be streamed. Dress code is free.

Remote participants can join the discussion sessions via chat at the end of each part. In addition to coffee breaks, the University of Lapland will provide sparkling beverages and savory snacks at the end of the seminar.

Registration for the event has closed. You can still participate via the remote link. If you have not registered but plan to attend in person, please note that refreshments are reserved for those who have registered in advance.
