Traineeship abroad

Students can pursue a traineeship experience abroad, whether they are registered full-time or as a recent graduate. On this page, you can find out how the traineeship application process works, as well as other relevant information such as where to find a traineeship placement, what kind of funding is available and the mandatory steps of the process.

Traineeship application process

Find a traineeship yourself e.g., through a platform for traineeships, and make sure you keep in touch regularly with your contact person in the company or organisation.

Here you can find online platforms that actively promote traineeship opportunities:

• Have the traineeship approved by a representative of your major or coordinator in charge of traineeships, after you have received the initial positive decisions from the employer. We can fund compulsory or voluntary traineeship to your degree.
• You can do a traineeship as a recent graduate. Remember to apply before graduation. You can graduate during the traineeship, and it must be completed within one year after graduation.

• Fill out the agreement for traineeships (LA Traineeships Before the Mobility)
• Sign the agreement. It also has to be signed by the person in charge of traineeships in your faculty and a representative of the organisation offering the traineeship.

Start by choosing the following:
Mobility type: Placement
Application period: Traineeship applications 2024–2026

• Exchange Programme is for Europe Erasmus+ and for others Free Mover
• Attach the completed, signed, and scanned LA Traineeships before the Mobility agreement.
• Save and send the application.
• Wait for the acceptance.
• After being informed by email that your traineeship has been accepted, confirm your exchange in SoleMOVE by clicking “I confirm”.

  • Fill out the SoleGRANT application but only after your SoleMOVE traineeship application has been approved and you have confirmed your exchange in SoleMOVE.
  • Log into SoleGRANT through SoleMOVE. The information on your exchange in the system will automatically be transferred to the grant application.
  • All applicants: Scan and attach the accepted LA Traineeships Before the Mobility agreement
  • You will be informed of the decision on your application by email when your application has been reviewed.

When doing a traineeship abroad, you are eligible for a traineeship grant. The amount of the grant depends on the chosen exchange programme and the length of the traineeship. You may get a grant for a Traineeship that lasts 2–6 months. You can apply for our exchange grants through the SoleGRANT system, which is accessed by first logging in to the SoleMOVE system.

You will get the grant in two parts: the first payment is 80 % of the total grant amount and it is paid before the exchange. The second one is 20 % of the total amount and it is paid after the traineeship. To get the second payment you are required to complete the reporting.

Destinations outside Europe

Duration of the exchange 3–6 months, grant €400.
Duration of the exchange 7–12 months, grant €500.

Erasmus+ grant

Erasmus+ grants are determined according to the duration of the exchange and the cost of living in the target country. One calendar month makes you eligible for one full monthly payment. For example the period 15 Sep – 14 Oct constitutes a full calendar month. The days exceeding a full month make you eligible for a daily allowance according to the category (below).

Erasmus+ G1 Placement
Grant: 690 euros/month, daily grant 23€
Target countries: Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden

Erasmus+ G2 Placement
Grant: 640 euros/month, daily grant 21,30 €
Target countries: Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Cyprus, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Turkey & North Macedonia

Erasmus+ travel grant & Green Travel

The Erasmus+ travel grant is determined based on the distance between the city of the home university and the city of the exchange destination (length of the one-way trip in kilometres).
The travel distance is calculated with the Distance Calculator of the Erasmus+ programme (link to the calculator).

You can apply for additional Green Travel support if you travel using an environmentally friendly means of transport (bus, train, carpool or bicycle). At least half of the journeys must be made using the aforementioned green means of transport. You can find more information in the Green Travel declaration form (link to the form).

External grants

You are recommended to request external grants from foundations, organisations, funds, societies, etc. You may request for example grants of the Finnish National Acency for Education, country-specific grants or grants given by organisations such as the Finnish Japanese Society. There are plenty of tips and links available on the Internet. You should also be active and apply in good time because each organisation has its own application period.

• When doing your traineeship, you are responsible for yourself and expected to act in accordance with the rules and guidelines set by the organisation you work for.
• See to it that the procedures you agree on with the employer are followed and that your rights are protected.
• Changes of the traineeship period (cancellation or extension) should be agreed with the traineeship organisation and your home faculty. Use the changes -document (LA Traineeships During the Mobility). Remember the correct dates, signatures by three parties!
• Upload the changes -document to the SoleMOVE After Exchange tab as soon as possible.
• Get in touch with your home university if any questions or problems come up during the traineeship. Your contact at the University is the academic responsible person in your faculty or Advisor Päivi Martin at the Internationalisation services.

• The agreement after traineeship (LA Traineeships After the Mobility) confirms the tasks and goals, as well as the period of the traineeship.
• You can also ask for the certificate of employment from your employer.

• Upload the agreement after traineeship signed by the employer to the SoleMOVE After Exchange tab as soon as possible after your traineeship period has ended.
• Provide feedback to your home university (Outgoing Traineeship Feedback) in SoleMOVE as soon as possible after your exchange has ended.
• Also provide feedback through the EUSurvey (European Commission) if you have received an Erasmus+ grant.
• Take the OLS language test if you have received an Erasmus+ grant. You will get the invitation to your email.
• Send “Reporting completed” message to outgoing(at)ulapland.fi when you are done.

Apply for credit for your traineeship

• Send the Transcript of Work and the required traineeship report to the person in your faculty in charge of traineeships to get the credits you’ve earned.

  • Share your traineeship experience and inspire others to do an international traineeship – your experience might encourage others to seize the opportunity!
