Our research

In Indigenous thought, as well as political and legal orders, humans and their social worlds are indivisible from the environment: humans co-construct shared societies with other beings.

The research of the Centre of Excellence for Multibeing Justice in Indigenous Societies (MultiBEING) is grounded in Indigenous ways of thinking and knowing. In our work, Indigenous conceptions of humanity and human responsibility are brought into dialogue with research in the humanities, social sciences, law and natural sciences.

Our aim is to explore how these principles of responsibility and justice can promote multibeing justice, and to develop the related concepts and theory.

Our research community brings together scholars in Sámi and Indigenous studies and international law. Our research team members work at the University of Lapland and the University of Helsinki. The international network links leading Indigenous research and scholars in the Arctic region, as well as in Central Asia and the Amazon.

Multibeing Justice in Indigenous Societies is funded by the Research Council of Finland for the programme period 2026–2033. It is the first Centre of Excellence in research led by the University of Lapland.
