Checklist for a new student:
10 steps to start your studies

Follow this step-by-step guide and complete the steps to successfully start your studies – from the moment of your acceptance letter till the day of your arrival. Start right after you have received your acceptance information from us. These steps are important pillars in order to successfully start your studies. Check the dates of the pre-arrival webinars, infosessions and Q&A's below (step 6.).

Some applicants are accepted conditionally. Conditions are applicant-specific, and you can check the condition regarding your acceptance via the link you have received in the automatic acceptance email from Studyinfo OR by logging into My Studyinfo with strong identification (not available to all applicants).

You can check the possible reasons for conditional acceptance and how to submit required documents here. In addition to these reasons, on your Studyinfo there is a mention of a tuition fee, if you are liable to pay tuition fees.

If you cannot log into Studyinfo, you can accept the study place and/or receive information about the conditions by contacting admission@ulapland.fi.

You are required to take the necessary action and meet the condition by the given deadline, otherwise your study offer will be revoked.

To secure your study place, you must accept your study offer by July 9, 2026, 15:00 (UTC+3). You can do this via the secure link in your email or by logging in to Studyinfo.fi .

Please note that you may only accept one study place per academic term leading to a higher education degree in Finland (Universities Act 558/2009). If you decide not to accept the offered study place, you can reject the offer in Studyinfo.

1. Registration

Your study right officially begins on 1st August. After accepting your study offer, it’s time to enroll for the academic year and register as an attending student. Registration is required for access to university systems, enrolling in courses and student benefits. In order to maintain the right to study, you are required to register as an attending or a non-attending student separately for each academic year.

Students who are liable to pay a tuition fee

Students who are liable to pay a tuition fee must pay the fee by July 9, 2026. The tuition fee payment is paid together with the registration fee (Student Union membership fee) of 61 euros for the academic year 2026-2027. Detailed information about how to pay the fee is available here. Student without a scholarship can take advantage of the Early Bird discount by paying the fee by April 2, 2026.

Please note that the registration will be in effect only after you have met the possible conditions placed upon your admission.

Students not liable to pay a tuition fee

You can register for the academic year in Studyinfo after accepting your study offer. The registration fee (Student Union membership fee) is 61 euros for the academic year 2026-2027. The registration fee must be paid by 9 July 2026, 15:00 (UTC+3).

Please note that you will be able to register only after you have met the possible conditions placed upon your admission.

If you’re not able to start your studies, you may have the option to register as a non-attending student

As a first-year student, you may register as non-attending if you are

  • in active service in accordance with the Conscription Act (1438/2007), the Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007) or the Women’s Voluntary Military Service Act (194/1995)
  • on maternity, paternity or parental leave
  • is unable to begin studies owing to a medical condition (Amendment 324/2015)

If you are registering as absent, please contact admission@ulapland.fi and provide official documentation of the reason for your absence.

2. Pay the compulsory healthcare fee for students in higher education to Kela

Students who have registered as an attending student at a Finnish university to complete a degree must pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education to Kela for each term (twice a year). Kela does not send you a bill for the fee, so you must make sure to pay it on your own initiative. See detailed Kela instructions and deadlines and pay the fee.

Note: If you have social security coverage in another EU or EEA country, Switzerland, Great Britain or Northern Ireland, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee. Read detailed Kela instructions .

This is separate from the Student Union membership fee and the required insurance policy of a residence permit application.

Please keep in mind that you will also need to cover the living costs in Rovaniemi, where the average monthly living expenses for a single student can vary from €900 to €1200. These expenses typically include essentials like housing, food, and your free time spendings or transport. Plan your budget early to avoid surprises and problems.

This step is crucial for non-EU/EEA students and you should start the preparations as soon as you have been accepted.

If you’re from outside the EU/EEA, you need a Finnish residence permit to study in Lapland. Note, that you can apply the residence permit even before you have your housing, tickets and other practical matters ready.

1. Get health insurance
All international students at the University of Lapland must have a valid insurance policy throughout the studies and stay in Finland. You will be required to present proof of insurance when applying for a residence permit (non-EU/EEA students) and upon your arrival at the university.

If you are a non-EU/EEA student
You must have valid health insurance covering medical expenses for the entire duration of your studies. Your insurance must meet Finnish Immigration Service (Migri) requirements. You need to purchase your insurance before applying for your residence permit, popular providers are listed on Migri website.

If you are an EU/EEA student
Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) for emergency care. Extra private insurance is recommended, as EHIC only covers urgent treatment.

2. Start your residence permit process in Studyinfo
You should apply for your residence permit as soon as you have received the study offer. You can start the process through Studyinfo, where you also accept the study offer. Studyinfo will guide you to Enter Finland and pre-fill some relevant application information for you. Please take care of documents you will need, detailed information on the Migri website.

You can also apply for your Finnish personal identity code (PIC) at the same time. All international students in Finland must have PIC.

3. What’s next? Book a visit to your nearest Finnish embassy/VFS Global centre
You need to book a visit to your nearest Finnish embassy or VFS Global centre for identification. As residence permit processing can take 2 to 8 weeks, you should not delay starting the application. Once approved, you’ll get your permit card and if possible, your Finnish Personal ID code (PIC) as well.

If you are from EU and EEA
You do not need a residence permit, but given that you are staying in Finland for longer than three months, you need to register your right of residence after arrival at the DVV office. You will get detailed info during the Orientation days.

You should apply for housing right after you have confirmed your study place. Student housing in Rovaniemi is limited, so finding a place to live in Rovaniemi is one of your first big tasks and wins as a new student.

What kind of housing is available?
Most students use Domus Arctica Foundation (DAS) as DAS provides affordable housing options for students. Read more on the types of housing in DAS and discover the different DAS residental areas in Rovaniemi.

How to apply?
You can apply directly on the DAS website as soon as you have accepted your study place. Demand is highest in autumn, so the earlier you apply, the better your chances are. Decisions regarding placements are usually sent to applicants in late July and early August.

You need to provide a copy of your acceptance letter with your application. Please note that the application is valid for 90 days. You will receive an automatic message about renewing the application and it can be done by replying to the message.

Other housing options include private rentals or shared apartments. Please see more information on the website of the city of Rovaniemi.

Housing costs
Typical student housing costs: €300–450/month for a room in a shared flat. The price for studios is higher. You also need to budget for the housing deposit. Electricity, internet or heating can also be considered as an additional cost if those are already not covered in your rental agreement.

What is next?
Once offered housing, pay your deposit quickly to secure your place. You’ll sign your tenancy agreement and receive move-in instructions. It is generally advised that you bring basic bedding and kitchen items, or buy them after you arrive in Lapland. There are plenty of second-hand and affordable options available as well.

If you get stuck, Arrival services (masterschool(at)ulapland.fi) can help with advice or emergency housing contacts. However, the university itself does not offer or arrange accommodation for students.

Book your travel and pack smart
Please plan to arrive in Rovaniemi in time for the orientation week activities for a comfortable start of your studies. You can already check your flight, train and bus options. Book tickets early, as August and September can be busy. If you need a visa or residence permit, do not book non-refundable tickets until it’s approved. Remember to bring all key documents: acceptance letter, residence permit, insurance, housing contract, proof of funds etc. Pack some warm clothing as even in August, Lapland can get cold.

Let us know of your arrival date
Before your arrival, you will be in touch with Arrival assistants (peer students working in the Arrival services), and you can inform them of your arrival times if needed. Double-check the pre-arrival infosession and orientation dates, as well as emails from Student Services and MasterSchool. Make sure your first rent and deposit are paid so you can move in without hassle.

Download Tuudo and get the benefits for students
You can also download the Tuudo app before you arrive. It is useful for finding your schedule and campus maps. Your digital student card is also available on Tuudo. Utilise the many benefits and discounts with your Tuudo student card (like student discounts for train/bus tickets).

All ULapland degree students will have an ULapland email account (Microsoft Outlook) and a username for logging in to study systems such as Peppi, Moodle, email, classroom workstations and the wireless network.

After you have registered as a student, you will receive an email with further instructions on how to authenticate your identity and activate your user account. Patiently wait for the instructions in the summer (end of July), and follow the instructions carefully!

If there are problems with the online authentication, you can also activate your User ID during the orientation days or anytime later by visiting our ICT Service Desk and authenticating yourself by presenting a valid identification such as passport.

Read more about the user account here.

The orientation begins your Lapland student journey on campus. It is highly recommend to attend the orientation days, these are developed to help you in the beginning of your studies, just before the actual courses start.

Orientation days
Autumn 2026 Orientation days will be organized during August 18 – 21, 2026. The orientation will be on campus with online access to those who have not yet arrived to Rovaniemi.  You will get to know the campus and Rovaniemi, meet your arrival assistants, fellow students and key staff members. You will also learn about the academic culture, how to use university systems (Moodle, Peppi, Tuudo) and receive information about other essentials. In addition to the academic encounters, you can also make new friends and attend student events and happenings.

We highly recommend you to arrive in Lapland by August 17, to be able to attend the Orientation days on campus.

You can find the Orientation programme here.

Once you’ve arrived and settled in, it’s time to sort out your local matters. This makes life easier for everything from healthcare to getting paid for work.

Register your address and Finnish ID code

If you have received your Finnish ID code with your residence permit, you can register your local address at the DVV office. DVV usually organizes pop-up events dedicated to students, and the exact timing of those are announced in late summer.

If you do NOT have a Finnish ID code yet, you can apply for it at DVV when registering your address.

Opening a Finnish bank account

You can also open a Finnish bank account.

Most banks will require your passport, residence permit or registration, Finnish ID code and proof of address. Compare banks for student deals and English service. You can ask your arrival assistant or the people at your orientation for tips.

You need a local bank account for rent and work, and some banks offer student benefits, too. Having your address and ID registered also makes it easier to access online authorization systems.

Study Certificate

The study certificate is an official document which proves that you are a student at the University of Lapland, and it states the duration and details of your study right. It also includes your attendance status. The certificate states all your study rights at the university, including possible previous ones.

You can download the study certificate from Peppi after you have activated or received your user credentials. If your study right starts in an academic year which has not yet begun (academic year is 1 August – 31 July), choose and download a study certificate for the next academic year.

  1. First log in to Peppi and choose ”Study certificate and transcript of records”.
  2. Choose ”New order” and select the certificate you want from the list.
  3. After selecting the certificate, choose the document’s language. Select ”Order”.
  4. The electronically signed document can be found under the ”Documents” tab. The list displays all the documents you have ordered. You can open and save the document by clicking its name.
  5. You can remove any additional documents by clicking the red trash can icon in the ”Remove” column.
