Registration for the academic year

On this page you can find information about registering and enrolling as a student. Look below for the attendance enrollment category that applies to you. There you will find more specific instructions for your situation. You can also familiarize yourself with the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY) and the Healthcare fee for students in higher education.

After admission to the university, you have the right to work toward the pursued degree. In order to maintain the right to study, you are required to register as an attending student or a non-attending student separately for each academic year during the registration period. It is not possible to complete or change the registration status for semesters in the past. Registration is done at the OILI Service. Registration is based on Universities Act.

Registration periods
  • For the academic year 2025-2026 or for Autumn semester 2025 the registration period is from 1 June to 15 September 2025.
  • For the Spring semester 2026 the registration period is from 1 December 2025 to 15 January 2026.

The instructions on how to register for the academic year as a new student can be found from the “For new students” -website.

If you are an exchange student at the University of Lapland, instructions about registration on this page do not apply to you. If you have any questions regarding the matter, please contact incoming@ulapland.fi.

Students required to pay a full or partial tuition fee should pay both the tuition fee and the student union membership fee before enrolling as attending for the next academic year. Enrolment status as attending is a prerequisite for signing up for courses and earning credits. Please see here for more details about paying the tuition fee.

When should I register as an attending student?

After admission to the university, you have the right to work toward the pursued degree. Register as an attending student for those study rights you mean to pursue during the academic year. You are required to be registered as attending in order to receive credits for courses of study, to graduate or to receive a scholarship. If you have more than one right to study, remember to register for all of them. You can register for study rights as either attending or non-attending, or for different study rights in different ways.

If you are transferring from a lower university degree (bachelor’s) to a higher university degree (master’s), but your graduation application has not yet been processed, register as present for the right to study for a lower university degree. Your registration information will be automatically updated to reflect your higher degree upon graduation.

You are required to register as an attending student regardless of which studies you plan to complete so register as an attending student even if you plan exchange studies or internship period for the semester.

Please note that if you do not complete registration for any given term, this time is counted in your degree completion time.

How to register as an attending student?

Registration is done at the OILI enrolment and registration service for students. OILI Service will automatically guide you forward.

All bachelor’s and master’s degree students at the University of Lapland are automatically members of the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY). The student union membership is based on Universities Act (558/2009/46§). Pay the membership fee of the student union with Finnish online banking credentials or with a credit card when you register as an attending student in the OILI Service. For doctoral researches and exchange students the student union membership (and the student union membership fee) is optional.

The student union membership for degree students is 61 € for the whole academic year or 30 € for Autumn semester and 31 € for Spring semester if paid separately. If you wish to, you can also purchase Wellness pass. The Wellness pass is a service offered for higher education students in Rovaniemi. The Wellness pass includes standard training shifts, gym services, culture and other services that support holistic well-being. The Wellness pass is service offered by LYY.

The student union membership fee does not include healthcare fee for students in higher education. If your studies aim for a bachelor’s or a master’s degree and you are registered as an attending student, you are applicable to pay the healthcare fee. Healthcare fee is paid to Kela each term. Read more about healthcare fee from the website of Kela.

It takes a day for the information on enrolments to be transferred to the student register of the university.

NB: Master’s degree students from outside EU/EEA countries, read more about registration in the respective section abowe.

If you do not have a Finnish bank account, you may pay the student union membership fee by credit card or cash at the student union office. If you wish to pay the membership fee using a non-Finnish bank account, please see the bank account details on the student union web pages. Please note that you will be required to present proof of payment either by sending a copy or the payment receipt or an equivalent document showing the transaction by email to Student Services opinto@ulapland.fi. After this, your enrolment status as an attending student will be entered into the student register.

If you have questions about the registration, please contact Student Services: opinto@ulapland.fi.

When should I register as a non-attending student?

Register as a non-attending student for those study rights you do not mean to pursue during the academic year. Please note that as a non-attending student you can’t receive credits for courses of study, graduate or receive a scholarship. If you have more than one right to study, remember to register for all of them. You can register for study rights as either attending or non-attending, or for different study rights in different ways.

If you wish to change your status from non-attending to an attending student, you can do so in the OILI Service during the registration period. Outside of the ordinary registration period, please contact Student Services via email: opinto@ulapland.fi.

If you have a statutory reason for registering as non-attending, please contact Student Services: opinto@ulapland.fi. Read more about statutory reasons for non-attendance from Study rights -website. The registration as non-attending, also with statutory reason must be done during the registration period. Only if registration is done on time can statutory reason prolong your degree completion time. If you do not have statutory reason for intermission that time is counted to your degree completion time.

Please note that if you do not complete your registration for any given term, this time is counted in your degree completion time.

If you have been granted an extension to your study right, please note that registration as non-attending does not prolong your degree completion time in any case.

How to register as a non-attending student?

Register as a non-attending student during the registration period in the OILI enrolment and registration service for students.

As a non-attending student, you are freed from paying the student union membership fee. If you are applicable to pay the student healthcare fee, you are freed from paying that as well. Please note that this means that you do not have the right to use the services provided by student union or Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) during this time.

From non-attending to attending

It is possible to change your status from non-attending to attending at any time during the academic year. During the registration period you can change your status in the OILI Service. Outside the registration period, please contact Student Services via email: opinto@ulapland.fi.

  • specialisation studies
  • cross-institutional studies
  • multidisciplinary studies in teaching subjects
  • Arctic Studies Programme studies
  • studies completed by foreign exchange students.

If you are unsure whether you should register for the academic year, please contact Student Services: opinto@ulapland.fi.

You must be registered as an attending student when you graduate.

Register as an attending student for the semester you are planning to graduate on, even if you have already completed all the studies. If you anticipate graduating during autumn semester, you only need to register for the autumn term and. if you are a bachelor’s or master’s student, pay the student union membership fee and healthcare fee for students in higher education only for the autumn term.

If your studies have been completed and you have applied for the degree certificate by 31 July, you don’t need to register as an attending student for the next autumn term.

Please remember to also take care of the healthcare fee for students in higher education.

As a doctoral researcher, you must register as either attending or non-attending for each academic year separately during the registration period. Registration is done in the OILI Service. Please see instructions for registering as an attending student or as a non-attending student from this page.

You can only have your study attainments included in your transcript of records if you are registered as an attending student.

If a doctoral researcher does not complete registration during the registration period, the same instructions apply as for the bachelor’s and master’s degree students. Please see “Registering after the deadline” on this page for more information.

Doctoral researchers have the possibility to join the Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY). The membership is voluntary for doctoral researchers. You can join the student union by paying the membership fee in the OILI Service when you register as an attending student for the academic year or you can contact the Student Union. Contact information and more information about the membership, and about benefits connected to it, can be found on Student Union’s website.

Please note the student benefits for doctoral researchers are more limited than those for students studying for a bachelor’s or master’s degree. The membership fee is €39 for the whole academic year or, if paid separately, €31 for the autumn semester and €32 for the spring semester.

Finnish Personal ID code PIC

All international students must have a Finnish personal identity code (PIC) and it is registered to the Peppi Study system. Please remember to inform your PIC to the Student Services via encrypted email at https://securemail.ulapland.fi/ , with the recipient listed as opinto@ulapland.fi.

Membership of the student union

The Student Union of the University of Lapland (LYY) represents our students and offers its members a wide range of member services, advocacy, benefits, events and advice on the challenges of studying and everyday life. Membership of the student union is compulsory for all bachelor’s and master’s degree students. For doctoral researchers and exchange students the membership is voluntary.

Healthcare fee for students in higher education

All students who have registered as attending students at a Finnish university to complete a bachelor’s or a master’s degree must pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education to Kela (the Social Insurance Institution of Finland) each semester (twice a year). Kela will not send you a bill for the fee, so you must make sure to pay it on your own initiative by due date. The due date for paying the student healthcare fee is determined based on the date on which you register as attending.

You must always pay the healthcare fee for students in higher education if you are eligible for the services of the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS or YTHS in Finnish) and you have registered as present for the semester. You will not be exempted from paying the fee even if you, e.g., do not use the services of the FSHS, do not receive student financial aid or are studying abroad. You must pay the fee even if you are studying remotely and are not based in Finland.

However, you do not have to pay the healthcare fee if you have social security coverage from another EU/EEA country, from Switzerland, from Great Britain or from Northern Ireland. In this case, contact Kela at your earliest convenience.

You can find information on the healthcare fee and the due dates as well as the payment instructions from the website of Kela.
