Cross-institutional studies

A person throws yellow leaves into the air next to a body of water.

Cross-institutional studies allow you to study some courses from different universities and include them in your degree. Cross-institutional studies also allow you to broaden your competence and acquire knowledge and skills that are not included in the study offerings of your home institution. You can tailor your degree in the direction you want and make it more personal.

The cross-study offerings are updated annually, and we aim to offer studies that the University of Lapland does not have on offer but that are useful and sought after by our students. The cross-study offerings have expanded each year, and they are already quite expansive. The academic year 2025–2026 already has new study modules on offer.

The University of Lapland has a cross-institutional study agreement, in other words, a teaching cooperation network, with Lapland University of Applied Sciences (LUC), the University of Oulu (only in Finnish) and the University of Eastern Finland (only in Finnish).

How do cross-institutional studies function?

Studying at another university requires you to have a valid study right at the said university, which is why you register for studies through the cross-study service. You will receive your right to study automatically after registering for the studies. Please note that to be able to register for the studies, you must also be registered as an attending student for the academic year at your home institution.

  1. Registration for studies takes place via Peppi’s cross-study service. You can search for cross-institutional studies by using Peppi’s study search, add them to your PSP and register for the studies. More information can be found on the Peppi instructions.
  2. After a successful registration, you will receive a confirmation of your registration at the other university and your right to study by e-mail. (NB: the notification is only sent when you register for the first course.)
  3. You can see the registration status for different studies normally in your PSP in Peppi. You can also see when a teacher has approved you for the course in Peppi.
  4. You can log into Moodle by following the instructions provided by the target higher education institution. Usually logging in with a HAKA account is enough. If you have applied for studies offered by Lapland University of Applied Sciences, you can find the Moodle room of the said course by logging into Moodle with your own credentials.
  5. Study your courses normally.
  6. When you have completed the studies, you will receive the assessment directly in Peppi. It is no longer necessary to apply for credit transfer at your home university for completed studies.

Cross-institutional studies at Lapland University of Applied Sciences (LUC studies)

The University of Lapland (ULapland) and Lapland University of Applied Sciences (Lapland UAS) cooperate in teaching in various ways. Together, the universities form the Lapland University Consortium (LUC) which allows students to choose studies from the other university. The study offerings open to everyone are called LUC cross-institutional studies. In addition to the joint offerings, the universities also have the following field-specific cooperation networks: Cross-institutional studies of the Multidimensional Tourism Institute and The educational cooperation network of law (ULapland) and business economy (Lapland UAS).

The LUC cross-institutional study offerings include studies that complement the study offerings of the other university, studies that are pedagogically appropriate for students of both universities and studies that the students have wished to be included in the study offerings.

Cross-institutional studies for the academic year 2025–2026 are compiled in the study guides of each academic year.

Cross-institutional studies – Brief instructions

You can view the cross-study study offerings on the student’s desktop in the ISP view. Before enrolling in a course of study at another higher education institution, make sure that the course of study can be included in your own degree.

You can register for the course at the student’s desk using the Apply for studies -button. The service will ask you for approval to transfer your contact information to the target university. By accepting the transfer, you will be able to enroll in the course.

You will receive a confirmation email regarding your right to study from the target university to your email when the teacher accepts you for the first time for studies at that university. Upon acceptance of the enrollment, you will be granted a fixed-term right to study at the target university. The target university will instruct you on how to start your studies (e.g. on the usernames used).

Once you have completed your studies and the teacher at the target university has assessed it, the assessment will be transferred from the target university to your own Peppi in real time. The possibility of renewal and increase of performance should be checked at the target university.

Enrollment

You can enrol on the courses offered through the cross-institutional study network at the University of Lapland once you have a valid right to study at your home university and the study right is extended to the network, meaning that you are permitted to complete the studies. Additionally, you need to have registered as an attending student. When the right to study at your home University ends, you also have the right to complete studies at the University of Lapland.

Once you have enrolled on the University of Lapland’s course in the Peppi (or Sisu) system of your own university and your enrolment has been accepted, activate your LUC user account (see instructions). Please note that students of Lapland University of Applied Sciences do not receive a new LUC account for the University of Lapland, as they can use their existing LUC account.

After activating your user account, log into the Lapinkampus Moodle -learning environment with your LUC credentials. The workspace of the course opens automatically 6 days prior to the beginning of your studies. On the Moodle workspace, you’ll find plenty of information and instructions on completing studies.
