FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Below you can find frequently asked question concerning mobility and internationalisation opportunities.

The easiest way is to join our office hours via Teams (Tuesdays from 12 to 14 and Thursdays from 10 to 11). You can also send an e-mail to outgoing@ulapland.fi, but the fastest way to get answers to your questions is during office hours.

The duration of the exchange depends on whether you go on exchange for one semester or the whole school year. One-semester exchanges are often about 3-6 months long. The starting time of the exchange studies depends entirely on the exchange destination. For example, in Nordic universities, teaching in the fall semester begins in August-September and in the spring semester at the end of January, while in Germany, for example, the fall semester is from approximately October to March and the spring semester is from approximately from April to September.

Yes, you can work on your master´s thesis in exchange for max. for 15 credits. You won’t necessarily get these credits during the exchange, but when the master´s thesis is finished. This means that you can work on master´s thesis for 15 credits, and you must also choose at least 15 credits of courses from the target university.

Go to ulapland.fi/solemove -> select University of Lapland (LAY) from the menu on the left -> do not log in with your Haka ID yet, but select “Exchange Destinations Abroad and Feedback” from the top menu.

It depends on the destination. Some destinations have a lot of places, while others have a very limited number. For example, five students can apply to the same exchange destination, but there are only three places in the destination. We prioritize choices based on motivation letter and study plan. This is why it is important to choose 1-3 suitable destinations for yourself, if for some reason you are not selected for your first choice destination, then you can apply for your second or third choice.

You will need:

You can order a transcript and study certificate from Peppi.

You can write a motivation letter in Finnish or English. The language does not matter and it does not, for example, improve/deteriorate your chances. The attachments of the first application stage do not go to the target university, but only to the University of Lapland for processing.

If you are applying for an exchange, but you are taking an English language course at the time of making the exchange application, be sure to mention this in your application. Please note that different universities have different requirements for verifying language skills, which is why it is important to check on the target university’s website how you can prove your language skills.

Yes, you must write your own motivation letter for each destination and make your own study plan based on the courses of the destination university. Write all the motivation letters, for example, in the same Word file and divide them on their own, separate pages. Clearly indicate which destination the motivation letter in question is for. The study plan, which is also a Word document, can be copied and pasted after the previous one to the same Word document (CTRL+A -> CTRL + C, CTRL + V), so that you have the study plans of all target universities in the same document. Please note that only one document can be uploaded to the SoleMove system per point. The previous documents will be lost every time you upload a new one.

No, even one course is enough.

Participating in the Erasmus+ program, you take the OLS language test, which tests the current language skills in the language that you will use during the exchange studies. For example, if you come to study in English, you will take the test in English. The test result does not affect the realization of the exchange, and if the result falls below the B2 level, you get the opportunity to participate in a language course, which can be used to develop your own language skills (participation in the language course is voluntary).

If you are studying in English, in most cases, just verifying your English language skills is enough. If, on the other hand, you plan to complete courses in both languages (for example, English and German), you must also verify your knowledge of the host country´s language. Knowledge of the local language is recommended at the B1 level, as it facilitates, for example, the student’s integration into the destination country.
