Students who meet the eligibility criteria, required language skills (English B2), are selected based on previous studies, study plan and portfolio. If there are more applications than places available we will negotiate with the student and offer an alternative program/plan if possible.

Grading System
Finnish universities use numeric grading scales. In the University of Lapland, the scale used is from 5 (excellent) to 1 (sufficient). Please note that some courses are given only on a pass/fail basis without any further grading. In this case the mark ‘pass’ appears on the transcript. Every successfully passed course and examination is recorded on the student’s personal transcript. Failed courses or not completed courses are not marked. Below is a comparisons table with other grade scales. Please note that the comparison is meant to be descriptive and not normative.
The grading scale is comparable to the ECTS grading scale, as shown below. However, there is one important difference: the ECTS system is based on an expectancy of the distribution of different grades, the Finnish system is not. That means that in the Finnish system there is no rule or expectation as to how big a proportion of the participants in any given course can be given what grade; each student is graded on his/her individual performance, not in relation to the performance of others.

3 GOOD: generally sound work with a number of notable errors
2 SATISFACTORY: fair but with significant shortcomings
1 SUFFICIENT: performance meets the minimum criteria

We acknowledge that there are many different grading systems in Europe. The ECTS grading scale has been developed to help institutions to “translate” the grades awarded by the host institutions into their own grading scales. ECTS grade does not replace the local grade and higher education institutions make their own decisions on how to apply the ECTS grading scale to their own systems.
The ECTS system is based on mutual trust and confidence in the academic performance of the institutions involved. This said we feel that students should have opportunity to obtain the grade that they deserve i.e. with the highest grade they should receive highest grade possible.
