Study guidance

Are you pondering on how your studies are progressing or how to choose elective studies? Or what are the steps to make in order to graduate? Do you have questions related to working life and career planning? Don’t worry, the various guidance and counselling staff are here to support you. We have listed these below for you. And remember: once a month you are welcome to the Guidance corner in F-Hub – coffee, tea and guidance available! Check the timetable at the end of the page.


Guidance services for student

The peer students, arrival assistants are helping new international students with their pre-arrival preparations, welcoming you in the beginning of the studies and help you to integrate to your studies and to the university and Rovaniemi. MyTeacher is your degree programme academic support, and helps you for example with your Personal Study Plan (PSP). The Guidance services support you in various study administrative matters as well as career planning and counselling. The Well-being services are there for you for study skills, if you have issues with stress and they even have a well-being instructor to help with starting sports.

Arrival assistants are peer students trained in their task and they are part of the Internationalisation services’ arrival support team. They help you with your relocation and pre-arrival preparations and are assisting you with practicalities upon arrival. You will meet the arrival assistants in the online webinars before arrival to Rovaniemi and on the first day of your studies, and they will act as your support in the first months.

Arrival assistants supports you with the following things: 

  • Assisting with pre-arrival preparation. ​
  • Pre-arrival communication via GoinConnect. ​
  • Assisting with practicalities upon arrival, such as housing, registering with authorities, healthcare and other topics related to living and studying in Lapland.  ​
  • Customer service; information, advice and guidance tasks to help new students to adjust to the new academic and cultural environment.  ​
  • Provide support during orientation and integration events and activities that help students integrate into the community. 

MyTeacher guides the students to know their own discipline and reflect on their future professional or researcher identities, their needs and thoughts on their future careers. MyTeachers are an important part of guiding the students’ well-being, studies and learning at the University of Lapland. They are focused on guiding students with their choices and progression related to studies from the viewpoint of the discipline.

A MyTeacher helps you to plan your studies and with other study-related matters. A MyTeacher guides you especially at the beginning of your studies, but guidance is meant to continue throughout your studies.

A MyTeacher supports you with the following things, for example:

  • Orientating to the contents of studies, objectives and degree structure
  • Guidance with your Personal Study Plan (PSP) and accepting it in the Peppi system.
  • Guidance on choosing minor subjects and elective studies
  • Support on discipline-specific matters throughout studies your studies, as part of other student counselling

The Guidance Services are responsible for coordinating the beginning of studies and the guidance on personal study planning in the university. The Guidance Services keep track of the students’ progression in their studies and of their learning of learning. Additionally, they support the students with applying for credit transfers, individual study arrangements and student benefits, as well as with career planning and other student guidance.

You can turn to the Guidance Services for support with the following things, for example:Technical questions about the Peppi system or PSP

  • Matters dealing with progression in studies (studying at a slower or faster pace)
  • Matters dealing with credit transfer practicalities
  • When you need student counselling

You can contact us by following these steps:

  1. Leave a contact request by e-mail: ohjauspalvelut(at)ulapland.fi.
  2. Write “Contact request” as the e-mail title and in the message, mention your name, the degree programme or master’s programme you study in and briefly explain what you need help with related to studying/guidance. It is not recommended to mention deeply personal information in the first message. Please note that our e-mail is read by multiple persons working in the Guidance Services.

The staff at Guidance Services will contact you in about five weekdays after receiving your message.

All discussions had with the staff of Guidance Services are confidential.

Taking care of your well-being and upkeeping your study ability are important for studying and learning. The well-being services for higher education students of Lapland consist of services provided by university social workers and the well-being instructor.

When to contact a university social worker?

  • Stuck studies or thesis
  • Returning to studies after a long break
  • Study skills, time management and managing everyday life
  • Issues with self-esteem regarding studying, stressing
  • Coping and stress
  • Learning difficulties.

When to contact a well-being instructor?

A well-being instructor guides and helps with matters related to starting exercise, overall physical well-being and coping.

Instructions for booking an appointment with the well-being services can be found on the well-being services’ website, in addition to plenty of information about students’ well-being and studying.
