Global Education as a Minor Subject

» At the Faculty of Education of the University of Lapland Global Education has been defined as its own academic discipline, which can be studied as a minor subject. The aim is that, in time, Global Education develops towards the major subject status that can, for instance, be studied in the context of a Master’s programme. For now, the extent of Global Education studies is 25 cr. (ECTS).

» Themes & topics: Global Education studies focus on understanding globalization and multiculturalism as well as working towards a future-oriented and constructive culture of learning and teaching. Various themes and topics contribute to this end, including: globalization as a phenomenon; the idea of world citizenship within cultural identity; human rights and possibilities of a global ethos; the influence of religions in the global village, both as ‘walls’ and as ‘bridges’; challenges and opportunities in the multicultural school; practices of good governance and civic education; doing research in global education.

» Duration & timing: The total duration of Global Education studies is scheduled to about one academic year. The sessions of courses take place, on the average, once or twice a week for a few hours. » Student intake: The annual intake for Global Education is maximum 40 students. In case more students apply than can be admitted, further selection will be made on the basis of the eagerness of the students and the seriousness of their commitment to this area of specialization. There will, however, be no formal selection procedure, and admission will have to be determined, on a flexible basis, through ad hoc personal discussions/interviews.

Modules & Courses in Global Education

» Current Global Education comprises of the main sequence of courses (25 cr., the minor subject optional and available to all students) and a compulsory course (4-5 cr., for degree students in education). Below is an outline of the courses included in each module, as well as their recommended timing within the overall framework of studies. These courses are compulsory for those students who take Global Education as a minor subject.

» Studies in Global Education include various forms of contact teaching (lectures, exercises, demonstrations, simulations etc.) as well as independent work, both individually and in groups. All course materials are provided as points of departure for critical study and comparative reflection, not as given knowledge to be assimilated. At all times the purpose is to encourage students to investigate the reality and interconnections of the issues, to form a coherent understanding, to acquire core skills — i.e. to instill a culture of learning.

» The cumpulsory course, LKAS2105 Inclusive & Global Education, is for degree students of the Faculty of Education (regardless of whether they take Global Education as a minor subject or not) — both in Teacher Training and in General Education programs. The course includes basic intorducation to some aspects of Global Education, considered as necessary for those studying to become teachers and other education professionals.
