Educational Psychology

Educational Psychology applies psychological theory and research to practical educational and teaching work. It aims to support positive development at various stages of life and in different environments, such as school, work and hobbies. Studies in educational psychology also provide skills and tools to guide and understand learning and development processes among learners of all ages. Additionally, studies in educational psychology support the student’s self-awareness and both study and life management skills.

Key focus areas of studies include

  • well-being and positive (educational) psychology,
  • supporting positive agency and self-concept,
  • the development of social relationships, and
  • crises of growth and development.

Applications of educational psychological expertise include early childhood education, various levels of education from primary school to higher education, adult and continuous education, working life and organisations.

Educational psychology is a suitable minor to educational programmes that lead to positions requiring an understanding of individual development and well-being principles, interaction between communities and individuals and the flourishing of communities and organisations. Thus, knowledge of educational psychology is beneficial for those working for example in education and teaching, as well as in social work, management and administrative sciences, other social sciences and art education fields.

Teaching in educational psychology is strongly research-based. The University of Lapland actively conducts research in the field of educational psychology. Educational psychological research particularly focuses on the following perspectives:

  • Individual well-being, positive development and agency
  • Flourishing school, study and work environments and organisations.

Degree students of all faculties at the University of Lapland can freely study educational psychology. Additionally, exchange students and students from Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the Open University are welcome to the courses.
