Our university’s galleries

The galleries of the Faculty of Art and Design serve as inclusive spaces for diverse forms of artistic expression. Read more about our galleries below. 


Main campus galleries 

Gallery Hämärä is located on the 1st floor of the University of Lapland’s F-wing. There is a separate entrance to the gallery, which is accessible from Agora, the F-wing main lobby. This exhibition room is suitable for displaying hangable works, series of works and art installations. The room can also be fully darkened, if necessary, which makes it perfect for presenting audio-visual works. 

  • The walls are light grey, and they can be nailed and screwed into. 
  • There are movable walls that can be used. These walls are 230 cm high, 150 cm wide and 30 cm deep.  
  • Adhesive attachments are not allowed on the regular or movable walls.  
  • The ceiling height is 300 cm from the wall to the bar, and 360 cm elsewhere.
  • There are round lights on the ceiling as well as some visible structures and cables. 
  • Bar spotlights are in two rows; the first one is 90 cm away from the wall and the second is 180 cm away from the wall.  
  • There are two Full HD projectors attached to the ceiling and two cinema screens that are 240 cm wide.  
  • Wall sockets are placed at the bottom of the walls. 
  • The floor is made of reddish-coloured veneer parquet. There are four wall sockets on the floor. 
  • The back wall has a locked storeroom where the AV equipment is kept. 

Gallery Kajo is located on the 4th floor of the University of Lapland’s F-wing. The gallery is located at the top of the staircase, overlooking the main lobby, Agora. This exhibition room is suitable for displaying works and series of works that need to be attached to a wall. 

  • The walls are beech veneer that has holes, and it is possible to attach works to the wall by attaching screws to the holes. Adhesive attachments are prohibited.
  • Ceiling height is 230 cm for 190 cm from the wall, after which the room opens to a ceiling height of 266 cm. 
  • The ceiling next to the wall is made of grey grating, which can be used to hang light works. 
  • There are fluorescent tube lights and a bar spotlight on the ceiling 150 cm away from the wall. 
  • Grey ceramic tile flooring. 

Gallery Kellari is located on the K-floor of the University of Lapland’s F-wing. The exhibition room has two long walls that are suitable for displaying works and large series of works that need to be attached to a wall. 

  • The display walls are 14.4 meters and 9.6 meters long. 
  • Bar spotlight 120 cm away from the longer wall. 
  • The hallway ceiling height is 220 cm, and it is 180 cm wide. 

Gallery Kilo is located on the 1st floor of the University of Lapland’s F-wing, near the entrance hall. This bright room is suitable for displaying works, series of works and installations that need to be attached to a wall as well as for displaying video presentations.

  • Three grey walls that can be nailed or screwed into. One glass wall with light grey blinds. 
  • Width of glass wall panels: 90 cm – 118 cm.
  • Movable partition walls are available for use. Dimensions: height 230 cm, width 150 cm, depth 30 cm. 
  • Nothing may be attached to the walls or movable partitions with adhesive. 
  • The room height is 272 cm. The ceiling is a grey grid, suitable for hanging lightweight works.
  • The ceiling has general lighting as well as track lights for spotlights. 
  • On the entrance side wall, there is a sliding door. On the grey wall, a door leads to the exhibition supply storage.

Gallery Kopio is located on the 1st floor of the University of Lapland’s F-wing. This gallery hosts changing exhibitions of artistic research conducted by our university and cooperation networks. This exhibition room functions as a stage for artists, artist-researchers and art researchers of our faculty.

  • The gallery has two white walls and two glass walls. 
  • Nothing may be attached to the walls with adhesive. 
  • The ceiling is a grey grid, suitable for hanging lightweight works.
  • The room height is 260 cm.
  • Grey ceramic tile flooring.

Galleria Lovisa

Gallery Lovisa is located in the F-wing of the University of Lapland. The gallery features monthly exhibitions showcasing the Faculty of Art and Design’s artist of the month. The alumni, staff members and students of the Faculty of Art and Design are welcome to apply for an exhibition timeslot using a separate application form. The gallery is suitable for displaying works that need to be mounted on walls. 

The newly revamped gallery Lovisa will open in autumn 2025. 

Gallery Lyhty is located on the 1st floor of the University of Lapland’s F-wing, right next to the main entrance. This small gallery room has three glass walls, and there’s an unobstructed view to the room from outside the university, even outside of opening hours. The room is suitable for displaying individual art installations, and it can also serve as a display window for small, hangable artworks. 

  • When stepping inside, on the left is a red brick wall, the rest of the walls are made of glass. 
  • Ceiling height is 255 cm. The ceiling is made of grey grating, which can be used to hang light works. 
  • Bar spotlight on the ceiling. 
  • Wall sockets at the bottom of the brick wall. 
  • There’s a white platform in front of the back wall. It is 25 cm deep and 27 cm high. 
  • Grey ceramic tile flooring. 

Gallery Puoti is located on the 1st floor of the University of Lapland’s Faculty of Art and Design, next to Gallery Kopio near the corridor. The gallery has two fixed white walls and a glass wall facing the outside and the corridor. The gallery is suitable for sculptures, installations and works that need to be mounted on a wall. 

  • The gallery has two fixed walls and two glass walls facing the outside and the corridor. 
  • The display walls are 560 cm and 230 cm long. 
  • Adhesive attachments are not allowed. Blu-tack and instant tacky are allowed. 
  • The ceiling is made of grey grating, which can be used to hang light works. 
  • The ceiling height is 260 cm. 
  • The gallery has a spotlight rail. Only spotlights may be hung on the power rail. 
  • Wall sockets are located under the hatches in the floor. 
  • Grey ceramic tile flooring. 

Gallery Seinä is located on the 1st floor of the main lobby Agora in the University of Lapland’s F-wing, connected to restaurant Petronella. The exhibition room is formed of two long walls, and it is suitable for displaying large works and series of works that need to be attached to a wall.  

  • The walls are made of beech veneer that has holes, attachment is possible with screws. 
  • Adhesive attachments are prohibited. 
  • Ceiling height is 297 cm. This ceiling portion extends 170 cm from the wall, after which the ceiling opens into a high area. 
  • The ceiling is made of grey grating, which can be used to hang light works. 
  • Bar spotlights 150 cm away from the wall. 
  • Wall sockets at both ends of the wall. 
  • 249 cm wide grey tile flooring next to the wall. 

Arktikum galleries 

As its name suggests, Gallery Valo (Light) is a bright exhibition room. The entrance to the gallery is located right to the right of Arktikum’s main entrance lobby. The large and spacious exhibition room is suitable for displaying large works and series of works that need to be attached to a wall, as well as for displaying art installations. This gallery hosts exhibitions by visiting artists from the Wihuri Foundation and the Faculty of Art and Design, as well as various joint and group exhibitions with changing themes, among others. 

  • The walls are white, and they can be nailed or screwed into. Adhesive attachments are not allowed. 
  • The longest display wall is about 30 meters long on which side the ceiling height is 3.4 meters. 
  • The opposite wall is entirely made of windows – on this side, the ceiling height is about 8 meters. 
  • There are ceiling lights and the display walls have bar spotlights. 

Two small galleries, Katve (Shade) I and II, are connected to the Gallery Valo. These galleries are suitable for displaying works that need to be attached to walls, art installations and audio-visual works. Both galleries have Full HD projectors for presenting videos. Both rooms are available for application for individual exhibitions.
