Research at the Faculty of Social Sciences

Our research is firmly grounded in our faculty’s major and minor subjects which represent both strong fundamental sciences and multidisciplinary subjects.

We have built networks through our research and development projects at regional, national and international levels. We participate actively in many international research networks, in editorial staff of international journals and in international publishing.

Research communities

Our faculty hosts three thematic, multidisciplinary research communities:

These research communities are bound together by two conceptual perspectives. The perspective of information, power and influence covers issues ranging from the development of an information society to the forms of political and societal power, all the way to the measures taken by different actors to influence these issues. Influencing through information is an essential part of critical expertise and professionalism.

Locations, distance and social refer not only to geographic northernness but also to various cultural and temporal distances. They affect the construction and organisation of communities, the production of services and the well-being of humans. Understanding the tensions between communality and distance is present in many ways in the research conducted at our faculty.

Doctoral education

Postgraduate education offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences is scientific postgraduate education that leads to a doctoral degree consisting of a doctoral dissertation and other postgraduate studies. Doctoral researchers play a significant role in the research communities of the faculty. After graduating with PhDs, the graduates are experts in their field and qualified to work in the most demanding expert positions in society.

Postgraduate education offered by the Faculty of Social Sciences is scientific postgraduate education that leads to a doctoral degree consisting of a doctoral dissertation and other postgraduate studies. Doctoral candidates play a significant role in the research communities of the faculty. After graduating with PhDs, the graduates are experts in their field and qualified to work in the most demanding expert positions in society.

The faculty awards Doctoral degrees, and as is the case with bachelor’s and master’s degrees, the education content of the degrees is largely determined by the discipline of the degree. The Graduate School of the University of Lapland supports postgraduate education, and doctoral candidates have the opportunity to participate in the doctoral programme The Arctic in a Changing World coordinated by the Graduate School.

An existing right to pursue postgraduate studies is a prerequisite for pursuing a doctoral degree. There are two application periods for doctoral programmes per year. Applicants are required to submit a research plan along with their application. When you are considering postgraduate studies, we recommend that you first contact the professor whose area of expertise is the closest to your research topic and discuss the research topic, research plan and supervision of the postgraduate studies with them. You can find information on people suitable as supervisors and their expertise via our Research Portal

More information on applying and schedules can be found on the university’s Doctoral School page. Please also get familiar with our faculty’s postgraduate study guide (linkki lisätään myöhemmin).

Docents

Docents are established researchers in their own fields, and they typically work outside of the University of Lapland in other universities, research institutions or other demanding expert roles. They may participate, for example, in teaching and supervision of doctoral dissertations, and they also broaden the faculty’s research network and area of expertise.
