Italian

Why learn Italian?

Italian is a vibrant language of art, music, literature, theatre, and food. Italy is a popular tourist destination and an important trading partner for many countries in the world.

Learning Italian also opens the door to other Romance languages, such as French and Spanish. It is easy to start learning Italian if you know or have studied other Romance languages.

Our university offers beginners and intermediate courses. You can also take a course to strengthen your cultural skills.

Courses

In the basic courses you will learn the main structures and vocabulary of the language. We will practice interaction in everyday situations so that you can actively use the language from the very beginning.

Italian 1 is for absolute beginners, and the following courses build on what you have learnt in the previous course. If you already have some knowledge of the language, you can enroll in the course you find most useful.

The basic courses are designed to be completed in one academic year. They will give you a good basic knowledge that you can use, for example, during a student exchange in Italy.

Intermediate courses are a great way to develop your Italian language skills in your field of study. Today’s job market requires a wide range of language and cultural skills, and Italian speakers can find interesting career opportunities.

Attendance in teaching

As a rule, courses arranged by the Language Centre require 80% attendance. Required attendance is a prerequisite for passing the course. Online courses, and self-study courses are clearly marked as such on Peppi.

It is particularly important to attend the introductory lecture or the first meeting of the course to get an idea of the course as a whole and the tasks included in the course. If you are unable to attend the first meeting, please make arrangements with the teacher in advance, otherwise your place may be allocated to another student.
