We research

The research themes of the Co-Stars are organised as:

1) Participatory Service Design with Underserved Communities
2) Service Design for Smart Business Innovation and Cultural Economy
3) Socio-Materialising Service Design: towards more-than-human ethics

These categories include multiple research topics and interdisciplinary projects by the researchers and social innovators of the group, for example from addressing youth empowerment to study the role of arts in generating social change.

Our aim is to

The aim is to create interaction and address challenges related to access to services and issues of inclusion and equality, which may include sensitive and controversial issues. The aim is also to optimise existing services through AI-based service design.

The group develops new tools, methods, models and practical solutions for service delivery and co-development with remote or otherwise marginalised communities, as well as new solutions for people-centred healthcare and more competitive tourism or logistics services.

Satu Miettinen

Professor

Faculty of Art and Design

Satu is a professor and dean at the Faculty of Art and Design at the University of Lapland. She is chairing and working as PI for the Service Design Research Group. She is working as PI in various H2020 Transformations funded research projects and leading T-AP funded research project for the Finnish Academy. She has published widely around service design and artistic research. She is also a practising artist.

Piia Rytilahti

Piia defended her PhD thesis, “Pohjoisen muotoilun teoria. Kestävän muotoilun kuluttamisen perusteista” (in English: Northern design theory. Criteria for consuming sustainable design) at the University of Lapland, Faculty of art and Design October 2020. Her research interests are in design research, qualitative research methodologies, design philosophy, social practices, embodiment and interaction.

Kiwoong Nam

Kiwoong is Doctor of Design, a service design researcher, lecturer and project manager at the University of Lapland. He has worked at international companies in different sectors as a quality engineer, R&D engineer, and marketer. He has researched design value and its measurement for the strategic use of design in the service industry with qualitative and quantitative approaches. His research interests include Service design with AIs, Empatic design, and Design value.

Krista Korpikoski

Krista has experience in multiple service and product design projects. In the field of service design her expertise is in strategic development projects within the context of a multinational corporation, small and medium-sized organizations and communities.

Amna Qureshi

Amna Qureshi is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Faculty of Art & Design, University of Lapland, where she earned her Doctor of Arts (PhD, Pass with Distinction). She also serves as Project Manager for an innovative Sámi-focused initiative. Her expertise spans visual design thinking, visual literacy, arts-based research, cultural heritage digitisation, sustainable materials, and service design, with a focus on participatory methods that support inclusive storytelling, cultural sustainability, and ethical design. As an Arctic Six Fellow (2025–2026), her current research investigates Sámi digital storytelling and its role in cultural identity, sustainability, and digital representation in Arctic media contexts.

The Digital Solutions, Inclusive Leadership, and Employee Centricity in Hybrid Work (DILEC)

DILEC is Business Finland funded project and it studies the challenges related to the digital transformation of work. The research aims to find solutions to these challenges and promote a more efficient and healthier working environment in Finnish companies.
