Unit of Gender Studies

The Unit for Gender Studies is based in the Faculty of Education, but the research network of gender studies scholars covers the whole university and reaches across the faculty lines. Our research is cross-, trans- and multidisciplinary. We analyze topical issues such as gendered societal structures and meaning production, multispecies relationality, resilience, education and equality. 
 
The key areas of our research are: 

• intersectional feminism 
• social resilience from the viewpoint of gender, sexuality and generation multispecies Arctic environment 
• queer and trans studies 
• gender and sexuality in visual culture 
• feminist pedagogy  

Gender research has an impact on society in many ways and levels, from media to legislation. In the University of Lapland Research Assessment (RAE 2024), gender research was assessed as one of the university’s highest-quality research communities.
